Around the World in One Evening

23 Apr

If you can tear yourself away from the Double Decker music on The Square tonight, head over to the Oxford Depot to experience food from around the world at the Cook! Eat! Share! event at 6:00 p.m. (see date change below)

According to Oxford Eagle contributor Shanna Flaschka, Cook! Eat! Share! was founded by Daphne Ingene, a native of Hong Kong, as a way for international members of the Oxford and Ole Miss community to create friendships through their countries’ respective foods while learning more about each other and the countries from which they hail.

Several times each semester, the group organizes a special Table, which is open to the public. The members of Cook! Eat! Share! serve the food, explaining what every dish is and how to eat it, if necessary, and then the host for the meal narrates a Power Point presentation about his or her home country.

For this last meal of the semester, “World Spice Cuisine” will combine culinary specialties from nearly every continent. The meal will begin with Tom Kah, a spicy coconut herbal soup from Thailand, which will be followed by three appetizers: Sesame Oil Eggplants from China, Hijiki, a seaweed dish from Japan, and Cheese Bread from Brazil. The entrées will be French Boeuf Bourguignon and Indian Rajma Rice with kidney beans, tomatoes, onions and spices.

Side dishes will include wild rice from Minnesota and Steamed Choy Sum, a vegetable dish from Hong Kong. The meal will end with two Brazilian desserts—passion fruit mousse and coconut flan—and Sorrel, a distinctive drink brewed from the flowers of the hibiscus plant that is popular in Trinidad.

For more information, call Ingene at 915-3784. Tickets are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

UPDATE 4/25/10: This event is happening on Saturday, May 1. An incorrect date was published in the Eagle. Tickets are $25 and available for purchase at the Ole Miss Counseling Center on Rebel Drive. Send an e-mail to to reserve your space.
