Word has been spreading around Oxford about the Saturday passing of Deke Baskin, a barbecue pitmaster who owned several restaurants in and around Oxford, the last closing around 2005. He was 59 years old.

The Southern Foodways Alliance has posted a blog about Deke as well as a link to a past interview with him at the SFA website here. Tom Freeland also wrote about Deke on his NMissCommentor blog here.

I had known him for many years, up until the end of his life. He was definitely a fighter and a good person. I know his widow is still struggling even a year later.

It is really sad to hear of Deke Baskin’s passing. It would be interesting to interview pitmasters around town, to find out what they think characterizes the Mississippi style of barbecue. Rigia

This is a note about the Taylor Grocery lunch posting. I visited their website and there is no luncheon information on there that I found.

      Hi Roger,
The reference to the website was mainly for phone/address info. I’m not sure when they’ll have the menu online, that’s why I provided it for you in the posting. 🙂
