Today’s ‘Eat Local’ Panel

18 Apr

(l to r) Daniel Doyle, Shannon Adams, Ron Shapiro, Mike Stanton, Michelle McAnally, John Currence and John T. Edge

The meeting space inside Barnard Observatory was filled beyond capacity this afternoon when Oxonians gathered to hear about eating locally from John Currence, John T. Edge, Shannon Adams, Daniel Doyle, Michelle McAnally, Mike Stanton and Ron Shapiro. While the panelists had much to say about their own efforts to eat—and offer—local food, there was one fact that everyone kept returning to—eating local starts with you.

You can start by making a conscious effort to know where your food originated. Asking—and encouraging—local restaurateurs to buy local is one of the best ways to ensure that what you consume is not being shipped from thousands of miles away. Make it a point the next time you eat out to ask where your fish or chicken came from and if the vegetables were purchased from a nearby farm. You may be surprised to hear the answer.

There are several restaurants here in town that are already serving locally obtained food. Let us know your favorites here.

Brown Bagging It at Main Squeeze

11 Jun

Have you seen the selection of fresh juices available at Main Squeeze? Imagine bringing your own liquor and creating fun tropical mixers to enjoy out on the deck on a warm summer day. Well, you don’t have to imagine, because owner Ron Shapiro recently received a brown-bag permit (in technical terms, a restaurant consumption permit) for Main Squeeze.

Shapiro says he’s working on tweaking the Main Squeeze menu to be more in line with alcoholic beverages (think spicy) and will also increase operating hours on certain days in order to stay open until midnight. Expect to hear about live music and movies scheduled for the Main Squeeze deck in the coming weeks as well.

Fish Tacos Arrive at Main Squeeze

7 Dec

It was mentioned in passing months back by owner Ron Shapiro that his smoothie bar/cafe, Main Squeeze (mainsqueeze.com), on University Avenue would be adding fish tacos to the menu. Well, they have arrived! Available as an everyday menu item at Main Squeeze, the tacos contain grilled fish, red onion, cilantro and green or red sauce. Yum!

If you’re wondering where else in town you can find fish tacos, you don’t have to go far:

  • Taqueria El Milagro
  • Long John Silvers
  • Chili’s (shrimp)
